At first glance, the terms “team-building” and “competition” might seem contradictory. “Team building” is about developing your employees and colleagues through shared experiences. “Competition” inherently means that the outcome of the activity will have winners and losers.
However, at Barcelona Tours we firmly believe that a bit of healthy competition will bring everyone together in the end. Competition creates a common goal, both within the smaller teams created for the activity and the participants as a whole: the goal of winning! Competition also creates immediate bonds between the newly formed teams and gets everyone working together from the outset of the team building activity.
You can also use this competitive spirit to reinforce your company goals. What are you hoping to get out of your team building in Barcelona? Read on to discover four wildly different options that we can offer for your team, and visit our team building activities page for even more!
PHOTO TREASURE HUNT
Why is a Treasure Hunt a great Team Building activity?
- It requires communication, problem-solving, teamwork, commitment and creativity to win
- It transforms sightseeing through competition, turning a self-guided tour of the Old Town into a fun and engaging quest for victory
- As well as creating fond memories, the teams will have physical mementos in the form of instant photos.
The Activity
This original and exciting treasure hunt is one of our most popular team building activities. Not only does this activity require constant communication, problem solving and a keen eye for details, it also comes with instant mementos of the event in the form of instant Polaroid photos.
Your group will be divided into teams and each team will need to work together to solve problems and answer questions while navigating the Old Town in Barcelona with paper maps. The winning team will be the ones who answer the most questions correctly in the allotted time.
But there’s a twist: each team will also have a Polaroid camera and need to take 8 different pictures around the Gothic quarter; extra points can be awarded for the most inventive interpretations of the photo briefs. This means that your team’s creative side will also be ignited by the activity! Each team will receive a photo album, personalised with your company logo, and, when everyone comes together at the end to find out who the winner is, the whole team will love swapping albums to share and compare photos.
This activity can be organised morning, afternoon or evening; our most popular option is to have the Treasure Hunt in the afternoon and then the celebration at a delicious restaurant in the city. The activity usually lasts around two hours and 30 minutes but can be adjusted to suit the demands of your schedule.

Paella Cooking Competition
Why is a Paella Cooking Competition a great Team Building activity?
- It requires teamwork, communication, patience, attention to detail and creativity to win – and if you have a budding chef on your team, even better!
- Great for large groups that want a team building where everyone is in the same room but split into teams
- It combines team building with dinner! No need to book a restaurant for the evening as everyone will sit down together to eat what they have created.
The Activity
While we’re sure everyone in your group will have heard of paella, most will have never even attempted to make it. This classic Spanish rice dish, from Valencia, just south of Catalonia, is as popular today as it ever was and, instead of just going out to eat it, we’re offering you the opportunity to learn how to make it from scratch with help from expert chefs.
In a centrally located kitchen, our head chef will be waiting to explain the history of this classic dish and then you’ll be put to work creating it. Each team will have a chef working with them to create a different version of the meal, with meat, fish, seafood and vegetarian ingredients available. The chefs will show you the best way to prepare the ingredients as well as offer tips and tricks on how to create the perfect paella, but all the creativity and execution will be done by you.
We know that cooking is hungry work, so there will be drinks and snacks available throughout the activity. The teams will also learn how to make Sangria, a classic Spanish summer cocktail which goes down perfectly with the meal. And, of course, there’s dessert!
At the end, your teams will have spent a few hours communicating with each other, learning from each other and the chefs, and creating a delicious dinner which they will all sit down to share. Never has a team building activity been so tasty!

Sailing Regatta
Why is a Sailing Regatta a great Team Building activity?
- It requires teamwork, communication and trust in your coworkers!
- It is a team-building activity that can only be done in amazing coastal locations like Barcelona
- It’s a unique activity that it is unlikely anyone has taken part in before
- Requires no previous sailing knowledge or skills, although of course it would help to have a sailor on your team.
The Activity
The sailing regatta is an amazing day out on the Mediterranean Sea for your team. Your group will be divided into teams, maximum seven people per boat, and have the basics of sailing and navigating explained by an experienced skipper.
After some time practicing on the waves, each team will be timed as they steer their way through a set of pre-arranged buoys, putting all their new-found skills to the test. Their time will be affected by how well they have learned to work the various parts of the boat and sail – this isn’t a simple case of sailing in a straight line from one buoy to the next! – and the team with the fastest time will win a bottle of cava to toast their victory.
This is the perfect activity for groups who want to really challenge their teams while having lots of fun and laughter along the way.
Wipeout: Warriors of Fun
Why is Wipeout: Warriors of Fun a great Team Building activity?
- This is a high-energy, adrenaline-filled group activity
- It will bring out the inner-child of everyone in your group
- It can be adapted for groups visiting any time of year – it’s an outdoor activity that’s not just for summer
- The activities are adaptable to group size and ability.
The Activity
This team building activity is an amazing way to strip down the barriers and any social awkwardness as you will all need to be willing to be a little bit silly in order to take part.
We have all seen the TV shows that incorporate inflatable kids’ games and obstacle courses. These shows are internationally loved, as people all over the world love to watch other people run, skip, jump and, most importantly, fall over while tackling hilarious inflatable obstacles.
Well, now is the time to put your techniques to the test! Will you prove yourself to be a Wipeout warrior or will you fall at the first colourful hurdle? We will split your group into teams and you will take part in several different challenges. Examples include: a mechanical bull, giant whack-a-mole, inflatable obstacle course and even a good old-fashioned tug-o-war!
The games are suitable for all fitness levels, with the focus being on fun and getting outside into the fresh air. If you’re visiting in summer and worried about being too hot with all the running around, don’t fret! Water is added to the activities in the summer months to add an extra fun element and, of course, to help you cool off too. In winter, the reverse applies! We’ll take the water away.
